Travel tax risk protection

Monaeo is a platform designed to empower users in managing location data and mitigating tax risks and audits. I joined Monaeo as a UX designer to elevate the user experience of the platform, addressing usability issues and enhancing overall usability.

Discovery

Heuristic evaluation

My journey began with a comprehensive UX audit and heuristic analysis. This evaluation revealed several deficiencies in the platform's interface, failing to meet basic usability standards. In particular, the calendar interface presented numerous pain points and confusion for users. Data was displayed in small cards, making it challenging for users to comprehend, and navigation was cumbersome, requiring multiple back-and-forth interactions.

What I did:

  • Identified usability issues

  • Organized findings by severity and impact on usability

  • Generated actionable recommendations

Usability Tests

To gain deeper insights, I conducted user tests to identify primary pain points. Through this process, two significant issues emerged: the lack of a holistic view for users to understand all travel data and the difficulty in navigating through event lists with small cards.

What I did:

  • Planned tasks and metrics for testing.

  • Defined users profiles.

  • Recruited users.

  • Wrote interview’s script.

  • Conducted test.

  • Identified usability issues and prepared reports.

Ideation & Core UX concepts

New calendar

In close collaboration with project managers and founders, I spearheaded the ideation process to revamp the calendar interface. Our vision was to craft a new calendar that seamlessly integrated simplicity with functionality. Key UX concepts included:

  • Clear and consistent menu and navigation for intuitive usability.

  • Enhanced month view, featuring collapsible/expandable options for seamless exploration.

  • Effortless transition between year, month, or list calendar views for comprehensive data access.

  • Simplified editing capabilities, ensuring users could manage and edit data without losing context.

  • Rectification of basic usability issues, prioritizing user safety and ease of navigation.

Desktop calendar

Additionally, research highlighted a significant user segment struggling with managing extensive data via the mobile app. In response, we embarked on developing a desktop version of the calendar, providing users with a wider workspace for efficient data handling.

The desktop version emphasized:

  • Clear navigation across year, month, and list views, ensuring seamless exploration.

  • Contextual edit options directly integrated into the calendar interface for streamlined user interaction.

  • Bulk actions to facilitate the management of large datasets.

  • Simplified data addition for enhanced user productivity.

Implementation

Collaborating closely with the engineering team was essential to ensuring the successful implementation of our redesigned interface at Monaeo. Through open communication channels and regular meetings, we worked hand in hand to translate design concepts into functional elements. I provided detailed design specifications, clarifications, and support as needed, while the engineering team offered valuable insights and feedback on feasibility and technical considerations.

Final words

My role as a UX designer at Monaeo was characterized by a commitment to understanding user needs and delivering impactful solutions. Through meticulous research, collaborative ideation, and effective implementation, we successfully addressed usability issues and delivered a more intuitive and user-friendly calendar interface improving user satisfaction.
